Matsumoto sensei to Sarasan wa hajimete aimashita. Ms Matsumoto and Sara have just met for the first time.

A) Matsumoto : Hajimemashite. Matsumoto desu. Anou, onamae wa ? How do you do ? I'm Matsumoto. Um, what's your name ?/ Perkenalkan. Saya Matsumoto. Maaf, nama Anda?/ Hěn gāoxìng jiàn dào ni. Wo shì Songběn. Ń, ni jiào shénme míngzi?

B) Sara : Sara desu. I'm Sara. Saya Sara./ Wo jiào Shā lā.

A) Matsumoto : Dochira kara ? Where are you from ? Dari mana asalnya?/ Ni cóng nă lái?

B) Sara : Furansu desu. From France. Dari Perancis./ Fàguó.

A) Matsumoto : Sou desu ka. Oshigoto wa ? Ah. What do you do ? Begitu, ya. Apa pekerjaan Anda?/ Shì zhèyàng ma? Ni de gongzuò ne?

B) Sara : Kaishain desu. I'm a company employee. Saya pegawai perusahaan./ Wo shì gongsī zhíyuán.

A) Matsumoto : Sou desu ka. Douzo yoroshiku. I see. Nice to meet you. Begitu ya. Senang berkenalan dengan Anda./ Wo míngbáile. Hěn gāoxìng rènshí ni.

B) Sara : Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu. Nice to meet you. Senang berkenalan dengan Anda./ Hěn gāoxìng rènshí ni.

Basic sentence

わたしは カーラです。

Watashi wa Kaara desu.

I'm Carla.


Use

Used when talking about N1's name, nationality or profession.


Structure

                      です。

N1  は  N2    じゃないです。

                       ですか。

                    

N1   は  なん ですか。

Only studied in MARUGOTO (Starter A1 Rikai)

I'm a student.

B: Hai, Kankoku jin desu.

B: Yes, I am.

B: いいえ、がくせいじゃないです。かいしゃいんです。

B: Iie, gakusee janai desu. Kaishain desu.

A: おしごとは  なんですか。

A: Oshigoto wa nan desu ka.

A: What is your job?


B: エンジニアです。

B: Enjinia desu.

B: I'm an engineer.



Commentary

A

「Nです」is affirmative.「Nじゃないです」is negative. 「Nですか」is interrogative.


B

The「は」in「N1は」is pronounced "wa".


C

In cases when it is understood what N1 is, 「N1は」is sometimes omitted. (5,6,7)

Use

Used to talk about the languages one can speak.

Watashi wa Chuugokugo ga dekimasu.

I can speak Chinese.

A: のださんは  フランスごが できますか。

A: Noda-san wa Furansugo ga dekimasu ka.

A: Mr. Noda, can you speak French?


B: いいえ、できません。

B: Iie, dekimasen.

B: No, I can't.

A: カーラさんは  にほんごが  できますか。

A: Kaara-san wa Nihongo ga dekimasu ka.

A: Carla, can you speak Japanese?


B: はい、すこし できます。べんきょうちゅうです。

B: Hai, sukoshi dekimasu. Benkyouchuu desu.

B: Yes, I can speak a little. I'm studying at the moment.



Commentary

A

「できます」is affirmative.「できません」is negative.「できますか」is interrogative.


In cases when it is understood what N1 and N2 are, 「N1 は」or 「N2 が」may be omitted. (2,3)

      mo


Basic sentence

わたしも  エンジニアです。

Watashi mo enjinia desu.

I'm an engineer, too.


Use

「も」 indicates that there is a similar object (person, etc.) beside N1.


Structure

わたし も N です。

わたし  は N (Language) も できます。

Only studied in MARUGOTO (Starter A1 Rikai)


Examples

シンさんは  がくせいです。わたしも  がくせいです。

Shin-san wa gakusee desu. Watashi mo gakusee desu.

Mr. Shin is a student. I'm a student, too.

わたしは えいごが できます。 フランスごが  できます。

Watashi wa Eego ga dekimasu. Furansugo mo dekimasu.

I can speak English. I can also speak French.



Commentary

A

「Nは」or 「Nが」 is replaced by 「Nも」.
